Camp Death III in 2D

Camp Death movie still

The curse of killer Johann Van Damme continues. Mentally ill adults relax in the new rehab center. ‘Camp Crystal Meph’ nicknamed, Camp ‘Death’ shows that not even a new coat of paint can stop an unseen evil. Many think the serial killings are the work of a copycat. But has Johann risen from the dead?

Camp Death III in 2D! is a comedy-horror parody of ‘Friday the 13th Part III 3D’ that has enjoyed a successful festival run since September, racking up 14 acceptances, 4 awards, and several nominations.

Casting

Dave Peniuk (Fun House 2018), Angela Galanopoulos (Ice TV Series 2018), Darren Andrichuk (3 Hours Till Dead 2016) and Emma Docker (Peelers 2016).

If you don’t do the work yourself, who will?

I was asked to screen Camp Death for Matt Frame prior to its release. I was even awarded a special thanks for the movie’s listing on IMBD.com. This was in spite of the fact I panned the film personally. I did as much as I could to get the word out. After all, there is an audience for everything. Just because I didn’t like it doesn’t mean others won’t appreciate the gross-out humor. Also, I have to admire this particular filmmaker’s dedication to promoting his own work. I empathize with the sentiment that no-one else will do it for you if you don’t do it yourself. To get this film out to the masses required some creative thinking and a lot of leg work. Literally a lot of leg work.

PR stunts for the every man filmmaker

One PR bid saw the Canadian Director run a campaign to raise $1000. Simple crowdfunding through Indiegogo. He made more than his intended goal. This isn’t the first time he has taken to such lengths to realize his own dreams and aspirations as a filmmaker. In fact, the film overall was made off the back of a 2014 World record ‘Coconut Walk.’

Coconut walk?

  • Matt chained a coconut to his waist and walked the local high school track for 24 continuous hours. He admitted that it was quite a test in humility, however, he raised $15 000.
  • He used this money to assist in financing his film Camp Death III in 2D which filmed shortly after his 109 Km (67 miles) leg cramping expedition in September 2014.

The director sat through his own movie for 52 hours straight

Camp Death III in 2D was released digitally through Amazon Prime. I was there when the Facebook launch happened and saw the massive amount of publicity it garnered. Matt said he would watch his own movie for 52-hours straight. He put himself through the paces to raise much-needed advertising money in the lead-up prior to the film hitting Amazon. It aired from 8 pm December 29, 2018, and finalized at 12:30 am on January 1st, 2019. After this PR stunt completed, Matt said the following;

“It wasn’t too bad, to be honest,” said Frame, “I think the first 12 hours were the worst. Those are the hours in which you really begin to question your life choices.”

What a way to bring in the new year! I mean, how much money did you make on New Year’s Eve? The marathon 52 hours, 27 minutes and 23-second watch-a-thon was streamed via Facebook, Twitch, and YouTube.

Why did he do it?

In the end, some people questioned the undertaking of promotion in this manner as having a slight air of desperation. Matt himself had this to say:

“Oh, that was not a slight air, it was a thick fog. However, I needed to do all I could to ensure that my golden years are spent eating pudding and yelling at pigeons and not ruing the day I couldn’t be bothered to promote my own movie.”
