Hanging out with Andy’s super fans
Back in April, I spent the afternoon of my 33rd birthday hanging out at my local cemetery. That’s pretty normal for me any other day of the week. However, on that day, I was there to interview the Conversations with Andy Facebook group. I hoped they could offer some insight about the people who regularly visit the grave of pop art superstar Andy Warhol. The result is an article published on “Ok Whatever” titled The People Who Talk to Andy Warhol From Beyond the Grave.
Andy Warhol is buried in the most unassuming location in the south hills of Pittsburgh. he also happens to rest just down the street from my house. I’ve been to visit him several times over the years. I can’t say I’m a super fan. Like I said, I love to visit cemeteries. Plus, Andy is not only a hometown celebrity but also world renowned. So, it’s a very notable spot to visit.
Andy’s grave is always decorated with Campbell’s soup cans, Coke bottles, and other homages to his life’s work. Much of this display is provided by the Conversations with Andy group. I loved listening to their stories about the different members, their events, and the friendships made from this quirky activity.
About Ok Whatever
The topic of this article came to me while pitching article ideas to Ok Whatever that would meet their quirky, fascinating, and paranormal criteria. This idea fit every category in their criteria of desired article themes. Madelyn Roehrig, the organizer of the group, was very accommodating and made the article easy to write.
I also learned a lot about Andy by reading up about his life and work, especially his influence on the modern art, advertising, and celebrity world. So, if you ever take a trip to Pittsburgh, be sure to make a stop in Bethel Park to see Andy. Bring him a can of soup. Or, leave a message for the Conversations with Andy group’s collection. In the meantime, check out my article, and let me know your thoughts about Andy Warhol.
Wow, super interesting! I had no idea Andy Warhol was buried in Pittsburgh. My mom went to Duquesne and over the years she has always raved about what a wonderful city it is. It think it’s awesome that you took the time to connect with the Super Fans and write about it!
That’s awesome. Pittsburgh tends to be the butt of a lot of jokes, but it’s really more interesting than people realize. Thanks for the comment!
I love Andy Warhol and his iconic pop art. I had no idea he was in Pittsburgh either. I did know that Pitt has plenty to offer though, particularly on a reasonable budget.
Nice write up and def quirky. Lol.
Thanks for reading!
An interesting post about an interesting person! Thanks for sharing…I learned a few things!
A very interesting article, indeed! I’ve seen images of Andy Warhol’s artwork, and I think he’s a very influential and talented artist. No wonder, he’s influence continue to grow even after his death.
I remember going to an Andy Warhol exhibition when I was about 20, it wasn’t really my sort of thing but he was an interesting and talented individual. That’s cool that he’s buried in Pittsburgh. I’ve travelled a lot in the states (I’m from the UK) but never made it to Pittsburgh. If I do I’ll be sure to stop by and pay respects.
The next time we are in Pittsburgh {probably later this year, as we have family there} we will definitely consider making a stop. And checking out the museum, as we’ve never been. Thank you for sharing.
Definitely. Each museum in Pittsburgh has a free day each fall, usually on a weekend. It’s called RADical days. The dates should be announced in the next month or so. Maybe you can plan your trip around the free Warhol Museum Day.
