Talking Shop

Why did you start your blog?

I started my blog because I went through a time in my life when I was so sickly and it felt never ending. I had to be taken off work for a few months. So I read other bloggers’ posts talking about their own stories and personal experiences. It helped me to fight, and because others were going through their own personal struggle with health, it made me realize that I wasn’t alone and we all have a voice and a message to share.

How long did it take to set up your blog?

It took me about 6 months. I was going through so many things and had a lot on my plate. I wanted to create something that represented me, my brand and what I wanted to share with everyone. Everything from my logo, colors, blog site and content I wanted to represent me. I couldn’t have done this without the incredible design expertise from Elizabeth Sawchak of Lotus Media Designs.

How often do you post on your blog? Do you schedule posts in advance?

I do schedule posts in advance, about 2-3 posts a week, however, I work on content towards my blog almost everyday or at least five days a week.

How did you create your logo?

Elizabeth helped me create my logo. She asked me a series of questions from my personality, my ideal avatar, colors, design and font. I would send her images that go with each question so she had a visual of what I wanted. I gave her all my ideas and she gave me her ideas and suggestions as well. She was the one who executed what I wanted to express to my ideal readers.

What is something you wish you’d known before setting up your blog?

There’s so much information. While I think that’s a great thing, I think it can make it seem difficult because we all have our own story, perspective and our own unique personality. We can learn from others but comparing your work to others who have been doing this much longer, especially when you’re still new, can be a hindrance.

How have you promoted your blog? What has worked best?

I’ve promoted my blog through blogging groups and interviews. As my blog is still new, I have found Facebook to be where I get the most traffic and views.

What’s the best review/compliment that you’ve received about your blog?

I wrote a post that I was inspired by from another blog’s post. I took what she wrote and gave it my own perspective. Then I linked her name and website in my post. She read it, and I was happy to know that she enjoyed reading it.

How active are you in the online blogging community?

I am very active on a daily basis, but I know there’s so much more I have to learn. There’s always more to learn.

How has this community helped you as a blogger?

I’ve learned so much from other bloggers. I’ve learned that we all have a voice to share and we all have an important story to tell.

What is your day job?  How, in any way, does it relate to your life as a blogger?

My day job is being a pediatric nurse taking care of babies and toddlers who have special health conditions. I work in their home.

These kids and their parents are so positive. I learn so much from them, probably more than I do for them. These families are positive and these kids have so much love. It’s easy to take what we have for granted and these kids and parents try to look at the positive side. It puts things into perspective.

Do you have a writing ritual or any odd habits or superstitions?

I find I get the most inspired when I just go about my day doing the things I love. When I don’t think about it is when I have more content that I come up with. Listening to my favorite kind of music, reading a book, watching YouTubers, etc. inspires me.

What is the most fun part about writing? The most difficult?

The most fun part about writing, for me, is being able to express who I am. To show my personality. The most difficult is allowing myself to open up and be vulnerable to sharing a part of myself.

What skills have you acquired or information have you learned from blogging?

I think I acquired the skill to be able to write about everyday life in general. Writing about everyday life has helped me to be more aware to enjoy and appreciate what’s around me.
