Talking Shop
Why did you start your blog?
I have always had an eye for nice clothes, fashionable items and anything eye catchy. As a young unemployed graduate, I started blogging to keep myself occupied as well as share my passion with others. Also, I realized there is a knowledge gap on brands to get fashionable pieces on budget. I started blogging to share my passion as well as guide people to brands to get trendy fashion pieces on a budget. Travel in my country is mostly for the rich as most bloggers focus on luxury destinations that very pricey for the average man. So, I started blogging on both fashion and travel.
How long did it take to set up your blog?
There are so many free sites as blogger to use. When I started out, I used free blogger for my blog. It took about one hour as I have basic knowledge on the use of website. Then I migrated to be self-hosted and this was done for me at approximately $30. The set up took about two days.
How often do you post on your blog? Do you schedule posts in advance?
I try as much as I can to be consistent. Combining my regular job plus living in a busy city like Lagos makes it almost impossible to be creative. I do post at least 5 times a month. And I don’t schedule my posts.
How did you create your logo?
Choosing and creating a logo was one of the easiest parts of my blog set up. I used Canva to create my logo. There are pre-set templates available on free Canva. All I had to do was to edit it to my preferred style.
How have you promoted your blog? What has worked best? What has failed?
There are so many spam and scam site promising thousand of views to promote blogs. I have almost fallen victim on two occasions to such scams in exchange for a fee. One of such was a site that I wanted to make a payment, but I felt this hunch to look them up on Google. The reviews on this brand was nasty as the use bots to send unreal traffic to your site. For me, I use Facebook ads and Blogarama premium. Both have worked perfectly well for driving considerable traffic to my blog.
‘What If’ Scenarios
Your blog becomes one of the most popular blogs on the Internet. What do you do next?
If my blog became one of the most famous blogs on the Internet, I would be elated. The next thing I would do is to write a book. The book will teach the youths of my country to learn to create wealth and utilize their creativity for themselves. This is because most graduates are trained to go to school to be an employee. It will address this issue while encouraging other creatives to push harder to achieve their goals.
If you could interview one famous person for your blog, who would it be?
I would love to interview Ana Wintour on her personal style and what inspired her to set up Vogue magazine. I particularly see her as a role model and force of fashion.
An assistant offers to work for you for free indefinitely. What do you have them do?
If I had an assistant to work indefinitely, I will have him or her promote my content on social media. The process of getting content out there can be time consuming. This will help me free up more time to get more content out.
Your dream brand offers to advertise on your site. Who is it?
The brand that I wish would advertise on my site is a Nigerian-based brand, All She Needs. I really love the brand as they sell stylish fashionable goods at affordable prices.
Just for Fun
Your trademark feature.
My trademark feature is a hairstyle accessorized with cowries. So, whether I am wearing braids or dreads, cowry is my signature styling hair accessory.
One bucket list item you’ve completed and one that’s still on your list.
One of my bucket list items that I started this year is boosting my posts on Facebook and Blogarama. I read somewhere that one can put up quality content on their website, but it will not be seen. So, this year, I added paid content promotion to my bucket list.
Favorite time of/part of your day.
Just like those days in high school that you can’t till end of day. End of business hours is my best time of the day. The fact that I have the rest of part of my day to be my own boss makes me feel powerful. I can schedule as many other things I want to do after work hours; blogging, cooking, reading etc.
Your most unrealistic dream job.
My most unrealistic dream job is to be dancer. Dancing as a profession requires skills that I am not patient to learn and neither do I have the stamina for long hours of rehearsals. I can’t even run 100 km to save my life. I will start panting like someone who would collapse. Lol.
Name a talent you have and a talent you wish you had.
One talent I have is creative writing. I am an introvert, so, writing is a way in which I express myself more. On the other hand, I wish I can sketch fashion designs. Sometimes, I see an outfit and my imaginations are stimulated. I think of a zillion ways of tweaking the outfit to look more stylish or create a whole new look. But this I can’t express with sketches. Someday, I hope to acquire this skill.
