About Merely Mortal

A gripping new first-person POV urban fantasy romance series by NY Times and USA Today bestselling author, Michelle M. Pillow.

All I want is a simple, normal life.

Unfortunately, normalcy is a luxury I can’t afford as a lowly human born into a powerful supernatural family embroiled in magic. They’ve always been quick to remind me that I have an expiration date. Imagine everyone’s surprise when it’s me standing above their graves, not the other way around.

The fire that took their lives wasn’t my fault, yet everyone is blaming me, especially the vampires. Now I have a target on my back and a bounty on my head. Without the protection of my family, I’m caught up in a tangled web of supernatural dynasties and arcane power struggles.

So when a handsome stranger and his young daughter take pity on me and offer me a ride, I don’t say no. It’s a mistake. One I hope doesn’t cost us all our lives.

Sometimes, being merely mortal really sucks.

Why do you write in the genres that you do?

I’ve always been drawn to the blend of romance, fantasy, and the supernatural. These genres allow me to explore profound human emotions and experiences through a fantastical lens. Writing in these genres gives me the freedom to create intricate, magical worlds and delve into the complexities of human relationships and personal growth.

Do you keep a notebook of ideas?

Absolutely! I have several notebooks and a plethora of Post-it notes scattered around my house. Whenever inspiration strikes, I jot down my ideas. These notebooks are invaluable, serving as a treasure trove of potential plots, characters, and settings.

Do you have a muse?

My muse isn’t a single entity but rather a combination of things that inspire me daily. My husband and daughter’s creativities, my cat Bunny’s managerial presence, and even the quiet moments late at night when the world is asleep. Inspiration comes from many places, including nature, art, and the people around me.

Are you more of a fan of plot-driven stories or character-driven stories?

I enjoy a balance of both, but I lean slightly more towards character-driven stories. I believe that well-developed characters can drive the plot forward in a way that feels natural and engaging. In Merely Mortal, Tamara’s personal journey and growth are central to the story, with the plot unfolding around her experiences.

Fill in the blank: “People will like your book if they like stories about…”

…self-discovery, magic, and the power of love.

What are your thoughts on typewriters?

While I appreciate the nostalgia and charm of typewriters, I prefer the convenience of modern technology. My writing process involves a lot of editing and reworking, and digital tools make this much easier.

Would you rather own a bookstore or run a library?

I would love to own a bookstore. There are some really cute indie stores out there. Plus, they have fewer restrictions than libraries. There’s something magical about being surrounded by books and helping readers find their next great adventure. Plus, a bookstore allows for a personal touch in curating selections and creating a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.

How do you name your characters?

Naming characters can be a stressful yet rewarding process. I often choose names with significant meanings or historical connections that reflect the character’s personality or journey. Sometimes, the right name just comes to me, while other times, it involves a lot of research and consideration.

What is your favorite website that you use to promote your writing?

My own website is my favorite platform for promoting my work. It’s a central hub where readers can find information about my books, sign up for my newsletter, and connect with me on social media.

If Hollywood bought the rights to your book, would you want it to be turned into a movie or series?

I think Merely Mortal would make an excellent series. The intricate world-building and character development would benefit from the extended format, allowing for deeper exploration of the story and its magical elements.

How many words or pages do you typically write in one writing session?

It varies, but I aim for at least 1,000 words per session. Some days, the words flow easily, and I can write much more, while other days require more effort and focus.

Do you have any writing rituals?

I always start with a cup of coffee in one of my special ceramic mugs. I often write with background noise, like the TV on, and my cat Bunny by my side. These small rituals help create a comfortable and inspiring environment for writing.

What are your passions/obsessions outside of writing?

I’m passionate about social anthropology, traveling and trying new things, photography, and spending time with my family. I also enjoy watching movies and TV shows.

Have you made any public appearances to promote your book?

Yes, many. I’ve participated in book signings, conventions, and online events to connect with readers and promote my books. Engaging with my audience is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an author.

Who would you most want to read your book?

I would love for fans of urban fantasy and paranormal romance to read Merely Mortal. I believe they will appreciate the blend of magic, adventure, and romance that the story offers.

Who is on your Mt. Rushmore of greatest/inspirational authors?

Jane Austen, J.R.R. Tolkien, Anne Rice, and John Steinbeck. Each of these authors has inspired me in different ways, from their storytelling techniques to their ability to create immersive worlds and complex characters.

Is there a book that somebody gave to you that helped you pave the way to becoming a writer, or is there a book on writing that you recommend all writers read?

On Writing by Stephen King is a fantastic resource for aspiring writers. It offers practical advice and insights into the craft of writing from one of the most successful authors of our time.

Is there an idea that a non-writer has pitched to you that you have considered writing?

I prefer to develop my own ideas, but I’m always open to listening to new opportunities or collaborations.

Do you ever use dreams as inspiration for your writing?

Absolutely. Dreams can be a rich source of creative ideas and imagery. Some of my most vivid and unique story elements have come from dreams.

Are you a big reader? Do you own a large collection of books, or are you more of a borrower?

I’m an avid reader and have a large collection of books. I believe that reading widely is essential for a writer, as it broadens perspectives and inspires new ideas.

Have you ever gone away to work on a piece of writing? If not, where would you go if you could?

Yes, I’ve been on writer retreats with other authors. We rent a house, and everyone works for a set period, then we get together in the evenings and talk shop.

What is an annoying thing that a non-writer has assumed about writers or the act of writing?

One common misconception is that writing is easy or just a hobby. Many people don’t realize the amount of time, effort, and dedication required to craft a compelling story and bring it to publication.
